This shift suggests a significant pivot towards longer-form content, especially as YouTube introduces YouTube Shorts and Instagram embraces Reels, both of which mirror TikTok's original concept. In contrast, TikTok seems to be heading in the opposite direction by allowing for lengthier videos.
Adding more time for videos means more opportunities for ad placements. Karyn Spencer, an industry expert with a background in Vine, notes that five-minute videos could enhance TikTok's average watch time by a few seconds. The extended duration also opens the door for more sophisticated advertising strategies. Spencer emphasizes that "technology companies are always looking for as much revenue as possible."
This development occurs against a backdrop of fierce competition, as rival platforms roll out their own short-form video features. Despite these changes, TikTok is not entirely transforming into a YouTube clone. Instead, it plans to maintain a dedicated section for users who prefer short videos, ensuring that longer content does not overshadow this option.
