Celebrate Your Existence: A Journey Through Consciousness

Chapter 1: The Marvel of Being
You are extraordinary. Yes, you. Each one of us is remarkable. Anyone who can engage with these words possesses an incredible essence. We are all crafted from the remnants of stars, and this isn't mere poetic fancy; it's a scientific reality. The universe itself is a wonder.
To begin with, everything commenced around 13.8 billion years ago with an intense, compact mass. Eventually, this mass began to stretch. When I mention expansion, I refer to particles that were once merely an atom's width apart being flung thousands of light-years apart within a split second. As the universe cooled—around 10 billion degrees Celsius—particles began to coalesce. This cooling period saw the formation of elements, followed by events so complex that they elude simple explanation. All this transpired within approximately twenty minutes. Afterward, there was a long stretch of time, lasting tens of millions of years, during which stars began to emerge. These stars produced more elements, leading to the birth of planets, and eventually, life took shape on Earth. The odds of life developing are staggeringly low, influenced by numerous other factors that experts can better articulate. If you're skeptical, I encourage you to read or watch relevant content—it's all accessible.
Despite the astonishing nature of this cosmic journey, the earliest forms of life on what we now know as Earth were rather unremarkable. The initial microbes were a significant advancement, though the excitement may have faded quickly. Fortunately, as time passed, life evolved to become increasingly complex, intriguing, and diverse. The first humans appeared in Africa approximately five to seven million years ago. We began to ponder our surroundings, explore the planet, create tools, strive for improvement, and engage in deeper thought.
Given the billions of galaxies present in the universe, it's highly improbable that Earth is the sole habitat for life. Nonetheless, when we contemplate the origins of life, it becomes clear just how remarkable it is. The likelihood of life emerging anywhere is astoundingly minimal.
That said, it's easy to overlook the extraordinary nature of existence. Much of the life on Earth seems to exist without deeper thought. While plants may be visually appealing, they don't possess consciousness in the same way humans do. As we ascend the food chain, we observe more evident and advanced forms of cognition.
What sets humans apart is our capacity to inquire. We frame our questions through six lenses: who, what, when, where, why, and how. While some animals may exhibit a rudimentary awareness of their environment, such as pets recognizing their surroundings and their owners, this awareness is not equivalent to human consciousness, which is, in itself, remarkable. Consciousness is not a black-and-white issue; it exists on a spectrum.
One could argue that some life forms exhibit consciousness while others do not, yet there are varying degrees of awareness. Different species possess diverse levels of thought. We are fortunate to possess a unique question that, to our knowledge, no other creature contemplates: why? This ability to reflect on our existence is an extraordinary gift, allowing us to explore dimensions of being that no other Earthly being has the capacity to address.
As humans, we are so intellectually advanced that we navigate our lives in reverse. We did not choose to be born; had we, it’s likely we would have emerged with a specific purpose in mind. Instead, we were granted consciousness and sentience, only to spend our lives (for better or worse) unraveling the reasons behind our existence and, to some extent, the means of our being. We have grasped some of the "how," as I attempted to explain earlier, but the "why" remains elusive and requires different approaches to explore. I identify as a philosopher, and this is where philosophy enters the dialogue. Some argue that as scientific knowledge advances, the relevance of philosophy diminishes, but this view is misguided. Often, science elucidates the "how" of life, while philosophy probes the "why." Science provides answers, yet philosophy challenges those answers. We know what is, but what does it signify?
Consciousness is endlessly captivating, placing us in a paradoxical scientific position. At present, science cannot fully elucidate the origins of consciousness, yet it remains the only objective reality we can comprehend. "I think, therefore I am." I am aware of my existence and my capacity to think; everything else is subject to interpretation.
You are human. In spite of the cosmic chaos I clumsily described earlier, you have defied the odds. You are alive. Remarkably, you have the ability to reflect on the beginnings of your existence and ponder the reasons behind it. You can analyze and rationalize your life retroactively. So, the next time you feel low, take a moment to recognize the wonder of not only existing but also being capable of questioning that existence. The universe has not only birthed stars and planets but has also fostered beings capable of contemplating the how and why of existence. In a sense, the universe has become self-aware. While consciousness may be a product of nature and evolution, it is a profound gift. After all, what value would the universe's awe and mystery hold if there were no one to marvel at it?
Admittedly, the question of "why" can feel burdensome at times, overwhelming and intricate, seemingly without end. Yet, it is also a privilege, one explored both individually and communally. So, take a moment to reflect, embracing the infinite wonder of your thoughts, knowing that they are real and belong to you. You and your thoughts originated from a tiny, dense ball of fire roughly 13.8 billion years ago. Amid billions of galaxies, planets, and individuals, your unique thought and moment will never be replicated.
The astonishing reality is that this journey continues. The universe keeps expanding, and human awareness keeps evolving. If we are fortunate, in a few million years, we might not only comprehend the "how" but also the "why," potentially evolving to pose a seventh question.
Let’s wait and see...
