Finding Confidence: How My First Solo Trip to London Transformed Me

Written on

Chapter 1: The Beginning of a New Adventure

In late June, while my Instagram was flooded with sun-soaked images from the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, I was preparing for a trip to the overcast and chilly U.K. Although London may not seem like the ideal summer getaway compared to Italy or Greece, I would not trade this experience for any beach holiday. This journey was particularly significant as it marked my first visit to the U.K., a country whose culture I had longed to explore since childhood. I was set to spend two whole weeks there, which felt like a substantial amount of time.

During the first week, I would be accompanied by my family as we explored London together. The second week, however, was dedicated to my solo adventure, as I had decided to extend my stay to see one of my all-time favorite bands perform at Wembley Stadium. Additionally, we aimed to visit my sister and her husband, who had been living in the U.K. for two years.

Once my parents departed after our week together, I would move to my sister’s home and begin my solo exploration from there. While I realize that staying with my sister doesn’t count as a completely independent trip, I truly traveled around London on my own, as both she and her husband were busy with work.

This journey unlocked numerous possibilities for me. I relished my time in London immensely, both with my family and especially during my solo outings. Here are the key insights and lessons I gained from my first solo travel experience at the age of 23, and how I believe solo traveling enhances confidence in various ways.

Section 1.1: Embracing Spontaneity and Adventure

If you find yourself hesitant about visiting a distant place due to laziness or indecision, take the leap, as it might lead to your most memorable experience yet. This was the case for me.

Every day during my solo week, I would wake up at my sister's house, prepare for the day, hop on the train, and venture into London. On one Thursday morning, however, I had to wait for my sister to resolve a bank issue related to her credit card. I had been using her card throughout my trip, so it was crucial for her to sort it out during her lunch break.

Initially, I planned to visit Greenwich that day, but my sister advised me to stay home and relax instead. While tempted to heed her suggestion, I quickly reconsidered. I was in London to explore, not to lounge around as I could do that back in Istanbul. I refused to postpone my visit to Greenwich.

Once my sister sorted her issue, it was around 2:30 PM—much later than I typically would leave. Regardless, I headed to the train station, took the overground train to Euston, and switched to two underground trains to reach Greenwich.

Following Google Maps, I found myself in North Greenwich around 4 PM. However, I was met with an empty area that did not resemble the Greenwich I had anticipated. At that moment, I nearly turned back, afraid of getting lost as time slipped away. But I quickly dismissed that thought.

Asking a friendly local for directions, I learned about a bus that would take me to Greenwich in just a few stops. After thanking her, I found the bus stop and waited. Despite my lingering doubts, I boarded the bus, determined to reach Greenwich Park.

After a few stops, I stepped off and walked a short distance to one of the park's entrances. As soon as I entered, I knew I had made the right choice. The park was a peaceful oasis, with sunlight bathing the green fields as people relaxed, played frisbee, and enjoyed time with their dogs.

Serene view of Greenwich Park

I made my way to the Royal Observatory, eager to soak in the stunning views of Greenwich. With each step, I felt a growing sense of joy for being present in that moment. It was the perfect time to visit, as tourists surrounded me, sharing in the experience.

From there, I wandered to Greenwich Village, explored the market before it closed, and settled into a Costa Coffee shop to unwind. Sitting by the window with a lovely view of Greenwich Village, sipping iced coffee, I felt vibrantly alive. I was fully immersed in the moment—a rarity in my everyday life.

This adventure stemmed from taking a small risk and embracing spontaneity. It was a moment I will cherish forever. So when opportunities arise, don't hesitate to seize them; you'll often create wonderful memories for yourself.

Section 1.2: The Joy of Unrestricted Freedom

During my first week with my parents, exploring London together was enjoyable and comforting, but it also had its limitations. When traveling with others, you often have to accommodate everyone's preferences, which can sometimes feel restrictive.

For instance, I have no interest in shoe shopping, while my father loves it, leading us to spend significant time in various shoe stores—something I would never choose to do on my own. However, on my solo week, I skipped the shoe stores and instead delved into record shops, spending hours searching for albums from my favorite artists.

I also ventured into neighborhoods like Brixton and Shoreditch, revisiting Camden Town, which my parents wouldn’t have preferred. Being on my own granted me the freedom to explore wherever I pleased, with no one to judge or object. I could linger in front of a captivating art piece or sift through items in a shop without concern for anyone else's expectations.

The freedom that solo travel offers is invaluable, and I believe everyone should take the opportunity to explore on their own terms.

Chapter 2: The Power of Making Personal Choices

I tend to be indecisive, often seeking others' opinions when making decisions, even minor ones. This tendency stems from a lack of confidence in my choices and a fear of making mistakes. Yet during my solo trip, I embraced the freedom of making my own decisions without seeking anyone else's input.

While it can be daunting initially, relying on your own judgment is liberating. One Friday, after visiting the Saatchi Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum, I decided to treat myself to a cocktail at Mercato Mayfair—a trendy spot that used to be a church.

I hesitated at first; who goes out for cocktails alone? But I dismissed my doubts and committed to the experience. I wanted to soak in the atmosphere, even if I was by myself.

As I walked from Chelsea to Mercato Mayfair through Hyde Park, I stumbled upon a concert venue buzzing with excitement. I learned there was a Billy Joel concert that day, which added to the lively atmosphere. While I didn’t have enough money for a ticket, I still enjoyed my cocktail at Mercato Mayfair, soaking in the ambiance and people-watching.

That evening, I wandered Bond Street, browsed department stores, mingled in the crowded streets, and returned to Hyde Park to catch the underground. This experience became one of the highlights of my trip.

On the last full day, I felt apprehensive about visiting Sky Garden by myself, having made a reservation two weeks prior. Despite my fears, I decided to go up to the 33rd floor. After my incredible experience in Greenwich, I felt empowered to embrace the moment. The breathtaking view of the city from that height was exhilarating, and doing it solo felt empowering.
