Discovering Yourself Through the Proust Challenge: A Personal Journey
Written on
Chapter 1: The Proust Challenge Unveiled
The Proust Challenge, initially popularized by Marcel Proust, began as a social game meant to reveal one's inner self through a series of probing questions. Intrigued by this concept, I decided to engage with it as I return to writing after an extended break of eighteen months. Rather than compiling a standard list for new writers, I opted to undertake this challenge proposed by Dr. Mehmet Yildiz.
As I reflect on these questions, I hope to uncover deeper insights about myself.
Section 1.1: Defining Happiness
What does perfect happiness mean to me? It's found in the company of my family—whether it's enjoying a game of Spades with my son-in-law, watching movies with my eldest child, or playing with my grandchildren. Happiness, for me, is all about cherishing moments with loved ones.
Section 1.2: Facing Fears
My greatest concern is the fleeting nature of time—there's so much I wish to accomplish in my life.
Subsection 1.2.1: Self-Reflection
Section 1.3: Admiration and Virtue
Who do I admire the most? That would be my dear friend, Nicki Keohohou. She's a motivational speaker and co-founder of DSWA in Hawaii, with an extraordinary ability to uplift others.
As for virtues, I find “goodness” often misinterpreted. It can create a binary view where one feels compelled to choose between being "good" or "bad," leading to harmful situations like abusive relationships.
Chapter 2: The Value of Honesty and Love
In this video, "Summarize Proust Challenge," viewers explore the essence of self-discovery through engaging with the Proust Challenge questions, offering insights into personal growth.
What about honesty? I strive to avoid lying, as I've always been poor at it. With age, I've found a newfound indifference to the need for deception.
Section 2.1: Expressions of Love
When considering love, my heart is full with admiration for my husband, children, grandchildren, and cherished friendships. Each relationship enriches my life, and I remain open to new connections.
Section 2.2: Defining Happiness
I can't pinpoint a single moment of happiness, as I aim to find joy in everyday life.
Subsection 2.2.1: Aspirations and Achievements
I wish I could draw something more intricate than a stick figure! However, if I could alter one aspect of myself, I wouldn’t change a thing. Every challenge, from childhood bullying to adult struggles, has shaped who I am today. My perceived "flaws" have contributed to my growth.
What stands out as my greatest accomplishment? It’s witnessing my children and grandchildren thrive.
Section 2.3: Desires and Values
Where do I envision my ideal living situation? In the mountains by a serene lake.
When it comes to friendship, I value those who are unafraid to offer constructive criticism and who uplift me in tough times.
Chapter 3: Inspirations and Regrets
In "Becoming a Farmer Florist With Milli Proust," viewers gain inspiration from Milli’s journey, embracing creativity and connection with nature.
As I reflect on my life, I identify with figures like Ben Franklin and Maya Angelou—individuals who stood firm in their beliefs despite the cost. My greatest hero has always been my father, whose lessons in hard work and love profoundly influenced me.
Regrettably, I reflect on not dedicating enough time to the people I care about, often prioritizing busyness over connection. This realization has led to a shift in my priorities.
My guiding principle? "Do no harm."
While I may not have fully unveiled my true self through this challenge, I found the process enjoyable and enlightening.
