Embracing Authenticity: A Non-Hippie's Journey to Self-Acceptance

Chapter 1: The Misconception of the Peace and Love Lifestyle
Recently, I found myself in a conversation with a yoga student on Instagram who posed an intriguing question: “What led you to embrace the peace and love lifestyle?” I took a moment to gather my thoughts, aware that Mercury is currently in retrograde (cue the eye-roll), and I didn't want to say anything I'd later regret after September 15th when it goes direct again.
After taking ten calming breaths, I replied, “What does that even mean?” She clarified, “You know, how did you become a yogini?”
Let’s clear this up right away: just because I tread the path of yoga does not mean I embody an endless stream of peace, love, and carefree vibes.
So here's a little honesty about myself: I struggle to keep even a single plant alive. While many may envision hippies nurturing their enchanted herb gardens and conversing with nature, I find joy in the comforts of a (luxurious) apartment equipped with all modern conveniences, including high-speed Wi-Fi, amidst the bustling sounds of Manhattan, Milan, Hong Kong, or Bangkok. Believe it or not, I’m allergic to grass too!
Now about that whole “flower power” trend? Not exactly my cup of tea. I prefer a stylish cotton dress, Alo yoga pants, Miu Miu flats, and a cozy cashmere sweater—flip-flops are not on my agenda.
And don’t even mention backpacking through Asia; I’d much rather have a wheeled suitcase and a stay in a five-star hotel. The Oberoi? Absolutely fabulous!
What’s the deal with the term “free spirit”? Hippies are often praised for their unrestrained nature. While the spirit may be inherently free, does that make us all hippies? I think not; I identify more as a scheduled spirit. My Google Calendar and iPhone navigate my days. For me, spontaneity might mean watching a movie, diving into an extra chapter of my current read, or listening to one more enlightening podcast from Alan Watts.
Patchouli? No, thanks. That scent might evoke images of tie-dye and barefoot wanderers, but it gives me a headache. I’d much prefer lavender or just some fresh air instead.
And as much as I love to travel, I'd pick a seat on Singapore Airlines over a cramped middle seat on Ryan Air any day. You do know I spent 15 years as a flight attendant for Delta, right? Always in style!
When it comes to hula hooping, I’m a total failure. I’ve seen many hippies effortlessly twirl them around their waists, but I can’t even figure out how to keep one on my hips. Can you relate?
So there you have it, dear readers. Despite my attempts to fit into the hippie mold, it's abundantly clear that I do not belong in that category. And you know what? That’s completely okay.
You don't need to conform to any label or pretend to be someone you're not to embark on a spiritual journey, to have faith, or to believe in something greater than ourselves that is always by our side. Trust that the universe has your best interests at heart.
You are perfect just as you are. If you struggle to see that, let’s chat.
Peace out! ✌️
