Embracing Punctuality: My Journey from Latecomer to Reliable
Written on
Chapter 1: The Struggles of Being Late
Throughout my life, punctuality was never my strong suit. My tendency to arrive late often led to various consequences that I had to endure. It wasn't solely my fault, but I bore the brunt of the repercussions.
From the Journal of a Latecomer
Reflecting on my college years and early jobs, I realize how frequently I was late. I’ve lost count of how many times tardiness affected my employment.
My experiences could fill a series of stories, but one stands out: my job at a cosmetic stand in a bustling shopping mall.
Chapter 2: A New Beginning
In early 2014, seeking a fresh job opportunity, I stumbled upon a position as a saleswoman at a cosmetic stall. My makeup skills were minimal, typically limited to concealer, eyeliner, and mascara. However, I thought, "Why not give it a shot? You have to do what you can to earn a living!"
To my surprise, I landed the position.
The role involved:
- Standing for nearly six hours daily at a vibrant cosmetics stand
- Applying colorful makeup on myself
- Facing the occasional barrage of plastic forks from mischievous customers
- Assisting clients while maintaining a cheerful demeanor, even when they declined help
The last part was particularly challenging for me, as I personally dislike pushy salespeople. Yet, I complied because it was required by management.
Section 2.1: The Importance of Opening on Time
One critical aspect of the job was being punctual to open the stall at 9 a.m. The mall's management imposed strict rules regarding this, claiming that any delays would incur hefty fines.
They warned that if we opened late, we could face a deduction of 150 PLN from our salary. While I doubted the validity of that claim, the fear of penalties loomed large.
This job, while not particularly demanding, became tedious, especially with the twice-daily dusting duties. Despite feeling somewhat silly in my colorful makeup, I managed quite well overall.
Section 2.2: Juggling Work and Exams
During my mid-year exams, I still had to work long shifts at the stall. Balancing six-hour workdays with studying proved difficult, particularly as I grappled with ear issues that were exacerbated by stress during exam periods.
One evening, feeling unwell, I reached out to my supervisor about my health concerns, knowing my shift was approaching.
“Are you saying you won't come to work tomorrow?” she inquired.
I hesitated, unsure how to express my inability to work due to my condition. The concept of calling in sick felt foreign to me at the time; I was simply not accustomed to it.
In hindsight, I realize I was naive, expecting her to help me avoid working while unwell.
Section 2.3: The Consequences of Tardiness
Fast forward to the next morning: I woke up in a panic at 9:10 a.m. I rushed to catch the bus and arrived at the stall at 9:40 a.m., nearly in tears.
The management deducted the 150 PLN from my pay, which was significant given my monthly earnings.
To put it in perspective:
- My rent was 800 PLN.
- I earned around 8.3 PLN per hour.
- I worked approximately 100 hours that month.
This deduction represented 18% of my paycheck! Imagine your boss taking away that much from your salary!
Reflecting on that day, I felt humiliated for not being able to open the shop on time.
Chapter 3: Lessons Learned
Ultimately, my employment at the stall ended after that incident. However, looking back, I recognize that I was a diligent employee facing health challenges. My supervisor had options to cover for me but failed to act.
In retrospect, I understand that it’s illegal to reduce an employee's salary due to tardiness. As a student, I didn’t take action beyond feeling wronged, but I did learn valuable lessons.
A Message from My Experience
This journey taught me to:
- Value punctuality far more seriously.
- Communicate openly when unwell and unable to work.
- Recognize that not all managers are willing to support you, despite their assurances.
