Essential Items for a Smooth Daily Commute to Work

Chapter 1: My Daily Commute
Like many people, I travel to work via train, which typically takes about an hour and a half, depending on whether I need to switch trains. After years of utilizing different forms of public transportation, I've come to realize that the journey can often be challenging. Thus, I thought it would be helpful to share the essentials I carry to improve my commuting experience.
You might be curious why I don't drive to work instead. The reality is, I've never found it necessary. Given that I work in busy towns where parking is scarce and traffic is often a nightmare, taking public transport—especially when it's just a short walk from my home—is far more sensible.
If you plan to commute regularly, having the right gear is crucial. For instance, since the train station is about a 10-minute drive or a 25-minute walk away, I prefer to rent an e-scooter that I drop off at the station. This approach not only saves me the hassle of paying for parking but also avoids the need to lug an e-scooter onto the train. In the UK, personal e-scooters can't be used on public roads unless they are part of a rental scheme, so this method works perfectly for me.
Now, I couldn't fathom using a messenger bag while riding an e-scooter or biking; a decent backpack is far more practical. Currently, I'm using the Port Designs Courchevel, which, while not the most stylish option, is incredibly functional for everyday use, especially in the rainy and windy autumn and winter months typical in the UK.
This backpack is designed to withstand harsh weather, featuring a built-in waterproof cover. If conditions become too extreme, I can easily pull out a neon waterproof cover from the bag's bottom compartment, effectively protecting my belongings from rain and moisture. The eye-catching neon color also enhances visibility for drivers when I'm out on the road.
Interestingly, this is not a new backpack; I bought it five years ago for my university days when I used to ride a motorbike to class. Back then, I needed something sturdy to safeguard my laptop and notes from the elements. It served me wonderfully in inclement weather, and the fact that it’s still in great shape after all these years speaks volumes about its durability.
The bag features multiple compartments for organizing my gadgets and accessories efficiently. The spacious front pocket is perfect for laptop chargers and cables, while a smaller compartment offers quick access to essential items. A second compartment includes slots for pens and smaller gadgets, making it a convenient place for notepads as well. The main compartment houses a dedicated pocket for my laptop and tablet along with ample space for other items, like my cable organizer and umbrella.

My Essential Device: The iPad Pro
The iPad Pro is a must-have for me. It serves as my notepad, planner, e-reader, and much more, effectively becoming my primary computer for daily tasks. At present, I'm using the 11-inch iPad Pro from the 2nd generation, released in 2020. Although it lacks the M1 chip, it still performs admirably.
During my train rides, my iPad helps me remain productive. The hour-long journey provides me with valuable time, which I primarily devote to writing blog posts. I recently started using Ulysses, a great app that allows me to draft and publish articles directly from the app, complete with a built-in grammar and spell checker, although it's not cheap at around $39.99 per year.
Huawei MateBook D15
I must admit, this is a bit of a stretch since I don’t always carry my personal laptop, especially since I already have my work laptop. However, occasionally, I do take my Huawei MateBook D15 with me, particularly for video editing while on the go.
I purchased the MateBook D15 for £499.99, and with its 11th-gen i5 processor, 8 GB of RAM, 512 GB SSD, and Intel Iris graphics, it was a great deal. When commuting, I often use it for basic video editing with Wondershare Filmora, which is beginner-friendly. I edit both 4K and Full HD footage without encountering serious issues, although I reserve more complex edits for my gaming setup.
One of the standout features of the MateBook D15 is its USB-C charging capability, allowing me to use a portable power bank if needed. However, I rarely have to rely on it, as most trains have 3-pin mains connectors at every seat, letting me use the standard power cable.
Logitech MX Anywhere 2
Despite the MateBook D15 having a decent trackpad, I prefer using a wireless mouse. Over the years, I've tried many models, but none compare to the Logitech MX series. At home, I primarily use the Logitech MX Master 3, favored by content creators for its ultra-fast scroll wheel, which is excellent for navigating long documents and spreadsheets.
The Logitech MX Anywhere 2 is a compact version of the MX Master series. While it lacks the side scroll wheel, it maintains the speedy main scroll wheel and is very portable and comfortable to use. My only complaint is that it still relies on micro-USB for charging, which means I have to carry the charger when I’m on the move.
Pixel Buds Pro
For anyone using public transport, investing in active noise-cancelling headphones or earbuds is highly advisable. They significantly reduce background noise, whether it's loud conversations or kids playing. I've used various active noise-cancelling devices over the years, and I can't imagine reverting to standard ones.
Currently, I use the Google Pixel Buds Pro, which I adore more every day. They offer excellent sound quality and feature multipoint technology, allowing simultaneous connections to my iPad and phone. This means I can take a call on my phone while watching a video on my iPad without needing to reconnect my earbuds.
The Pixel Buds Pro are lightweight and comfortable, making them easy to forget I'm wearing them, which is ideal.
Other Accessories
In addition to the items mentioned, I carry several other accessories. While not all are technological, I find them essential for daily commuting. For my cables and tech accessories, I use an Amazon Basics travel case, which keeps everything organized.
Living in the UK, I always pack an umbrella for unexpected rain. My current umbrella is made from recycled polyester and has held up well even in windy conditions. I also bring a water bottle—specifically, the LTT Store water bottle, known for its quality and ability to keep water cool. During winter, I like to carry coffee, so I invested in an insulated travel flask that keeps my drinks warm throughout the day without the fuss of traditional flasks.
