The Return of Smartphone Enthusiasm
I’m feeling a renewed sense of excitement about smartphones. The arrival of the Nothing Phone (1) has opened my eyes to the possibilities within the budget range, showing how even a simple addition of LED lights can transform a mundane device into something captivating.
5 Lessons from the Nothing Phone (1) for iPhones
This week, Samsung has introduced two new devices. While these phones are not in the budget category, they have certainly caught my attention. The Galaxy Z Fold4 remains a mystery to me regarding its target audience and practical use cases, but the Galaxy Z Flip4 is something I couldn't resist and have already pre-ordered.
Samsung is clearly eager to revive the flip phone trend, and I’m excited to finally experience one for myself. Here’s what I’m anticipating about the Z Flip4, along with some potential challenges.
Galaxy Z Flip4 Specifications
With a price tag of £999 for the 128GB model, the Z Flip4 is not inexpensive, but it offers a lot of value. This innovative phone features a 6.7" display that can fold in half, making it remarkably compact at just 71.9mm x 84.9mm when stowed away. That’s impressively small compared to today's large smartphones.
The display boasts a resolution of 2640 x 1080 FHD+ AMOLED, which translates to sharp visuals at 425 ppi and an expectedly smooth experience due to its 120Hz refresh rate. Additionally, the outer casing features a ‘Cover Screen’ that displays notifications, the time, and other useful information. This secondary display also functions as a monitor for the selfie camera, which is actually the rear camera.
The Z Flip4 is equipped with two cameras: a 12MP ultra-wide lens with an F2.2 aperture and a 12MP standard lens with an F1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization. It also offers IPX8 water resistance, fast and reverse wireless charging, 5G connectivity, a fingerprint sensor, and the capability to record 4K video at 60 fps.
Is This the Right Choice for Me?
As an iPhone 13 mini user, I've openly expressed my wish for Apple to diversify its smartphone designs. Although I love my iPhone 13 mini, it remains a simple rectangular device that feels increasingly uninspired.
Innovations in Smartphone Design
While traditional smartphone shapes have dominated the market, I believe there’s no reason to halt innovation. Why shouldn’t every smartphone have a flip variant? Despite my skepticism about the Z Fold4, I appreciate that it offers something unique.
What excites me most about the Z Flip4 is its size. My fondness for the iPhone 13 mini stems from its convenience, allowing for one-handed use without the risk of dropping it. The Z Flip4 takes this convenience even further. Plus, the act of ‘flipping’ the phone open will likely never lose its charm.
Samsung also deserves credit for the customization options available with the Flip4. While I chose the standard blue version, there are numerous Bespoke Editions to explore, allowing for personalized color combinations. Samsung clearly prioritizes styling and personalization, which is vital for many users and adds an element of interest to technology.
Content Creation Potential
I'm particularly eager to see how the Flip4 can enhance my content creation efforts. With my focus shifting towards short-form video content for platforms like Instagram and TikTok, having a phone that essentially functions as its own tripod due to its folding design is incredibly appealing. And that Cover Screen? It’s a clever feature that will surely enhance the selfie experience.
Concerns About the Z Flip4
Nonetheless, I have a few reservations. Will the novelty of flipping the phone become tedious? While I anticipate enjoying the gesture initially, it may become bothersome when I need to frequently check notifications throughout the day.
Moreover, there’s the fold itself. While it may be less noticeable with time, it's still a concern. Samsung claims the device can withstand at least 200,000 folds, but that assurance doesn’t completely alleviate my apprehension about its longevity.
Additionally, I’m worried about the size of the Flip4. Although it’s intriguing to have such a compact phone, I wonder if it might be too small for practical use. The lack of case protection means it could be vulnerable to damage, especially given my history with the iPhone 13 mini.
Battery and Performance Considerations
The Z Flip4 houses a 3,700mAh battery, which is impressive but may not measure up against modern standards. Considering the high refresh rate and capabilities of the device, I’m curious about its battery life.
Lastly, there's the question of the processor. If you’ve read my experience with the S22 Ultra, you know that purchasing it in the UK led to disappointment due to the inferior Exynos chip.

Looking Ahead
I truly feel this is the moment I’ve been waiting for. After missing out on the Z Flip3, I’m eager to finally experience a genuinely innovative smartphone. Will the Flip4 go beyond just being a new toy? Will it become my go-to Android device for the long haul? I can’t wait to find out.
The Future of Smartwatches
Another factor to consider is the Watch5 Pro, which is also on its way to me. If Samsung’s latest smartwatch proves to be compatible with other Android devices, and if the Flip4 enhances the smartwatch experience, I might find myself putting those 200,000 folds to the test.
Stay tuned for more updates!
