Chapter 1: The Magic of runDisney
This year has brought many changes to beloved athletic events due to COVID-19 restrictions, but don't let that deter you from joining in on the fun!
I vividly recall my first encounter with runDisney. Upon arriving in Orlando, I noticed signs along the highway warning of road closures for the "Princess Half Marathon Weekend." The thought of participating in a race at Disney World filled me with unparalleled excitement.
Once home, I immersed myself in research about these enchanting races, eager to find a way to join in. After a few years of recovery from brain tumor surgery and rebuilding my fitness, I finally decided to sign up for my inaugural event—the Tinkerbell 10K at Disneyland. Though I was traveling with family, I was the only one committed to running, and I felt a mix of nerves and anticipation as I made my way to the starting line.
As I walked to the corrals, I was amazed by the vast number of participants and their vibrant costumes. The atmosphere was so captivating that being alone allowed me to truly enjoy the sights and sounds.
The race itself was an unforgettable experience, taking us through backstage areas and past stunning scenery, including a breathtaking run through Cars Land as the sun rose. The opportunity to stop for photos with beloved characters along the route only added to my enchantment.
Next, I tackled my first Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend. This time, I was joined by a friend, and we focused solely on the half marathon. Once again, I was awestruck by the creative costumes and the incredible scenery. As I crossed the finish line and headed to meet my family, I noticed some participants receiving an extra medal for completing both the 10K and half marathon—a Fairy Tale Challenge medal.
Naturally, I knew I had to sign up for the Fairy Tale Challenge the following year. The year after that, I added the 5K to my lineup, completing all three races in February 2020.
Then came COVID-19.
In 2021, the Princess races transitioned to a virtual format. I initially felt disheartened at the prospect of running solo without the thrill of Epcot, the Castle, or the camaraderie of fellow runners in their delightful costumes.
However, a realization struck me: I was at home with my family, who had never had the chance to experience the joy of running a runDisney event, even though they were well-versed in spectating.
We decided to rise to the occasion together. For the kids, this meant breaking the race into smaller, manageable segments. For my husband and me, it involved completing the full distances in one go. We supported each other and celebrated our accomplishments with a themed Disney dinner while watching our favorite shows.
Weeks later, the medals arrived in the mail. The kids beamed with pride at the physical tokens of their achievement. To commemorate our journey, I purchased a medal hanger to display our newfound accolades!
This experience sparked a new family tradition during the pandemic. We completed the Wine and Dine Challenge in the fall, tackled the Dopey Challenge this month, and eagerly anticipate the Princess Weekend next month, followed by the Springtime Surprise Weekend in April.
While running these events at home can't compare to the magic of being in Disney, the joy of participating together as a family, cheering each other on, and sharing the thrill of completion is truly remarkable! This is why I have embraced these virtual races this year!
