Finding Freedom from the 9-to-5 Grind: My Journey to Escape

Chapter 1: The Struggle with the 9-to-5 Routine
Being a wordsmith—an individual who crafts language to inform, uplift, and entertain—has been my lifelong aspiration. I have dedicated a significant part of my existence to this pursuit, achieving varying levels of success.
While I did manage to secure a career as a technical writer for some notable organizations, it never truly ignited my passion. Sure, I contributed to training manuals, help articles, and how-to guides, but those efforts didn’t impact lives outside of corporate environments in any substantial way. Financially, I was thriving, which allowed me the opportunity to explore personal projects that truly fueled my enthusiasm. Although many of these endeavors fell short, they offered invaluable lessons.
However, everything changed in 2023 when I was unexpectedly laid off from my highest-paying job due to company downsizing. This left me scrambling for any work I could find to cover my expenses. Over the last year, I have taken on roles as a pizzeria manager, factory worker, and currently, I oversee a retail store for a major franchise. Unfortunately, these jobs have drained my energy and passion.
The relentless pressure is reminiscent of my time in the military, where I constantly had to perform under stress. Just like back then, I am forced to tap into my reservoir of determination and adapt to my circumstances. This is no easy feat, and I know many of you may be experiencing similar challenges.
Yet, the teachings of my father and my military experience instilled in me a resilience that prevents me from abandoning my dreams. I continue to push forward, albeit at a slow pace. Recently, I have discovered a working model that’s beneficial to me.
I manage my newsletter, Niche of One, where I share writing tips aimed at helping others. It is gaining traction, and I am delighted to see the positive impact it’s having. Additionally, I write on Medium, where the feedback has been incredibly encouraging, further fueling my motivation. I’ve also published a couple of eBooks that are earning some income, and the reviews have been overwhelmingly positive.
I am part of a supportive community that inspires me to persist in my efforts to escape the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck. However, I won’t sugarcoat it—it has been challenging.
My average day begins at 4 AM, allowing me some early hours to write or prepare emails before heading into the chaos of retail. I face the usual hurdles: unmotivated employees, demanding customers, and corporate expectations that seem unreasonably high given the meager pay.
By the time I return home to eat and spend a brief moment with my family, it’s often already time to sleep, only to repeat the cycle the next day. I consider myself fortunate if I manage to get a single day off each week, which I often spend catching up on sleep.
Despite this grind, I am committed to surviving and pursuing my aspirations. Here’s how I cope:
- Self-Forgiveness: I allow myself grace when I don’t meet my own high expectations. I have come to terms with the fact that I am juggling many responsibilities and pushing my limits. It’s crucial to be kind to myself.
- Recognizing the Need for Breaks: I understand that taking breaks may delay my progress, but it also ensures that when I do complete a task, it meets my standards.
- Consistency: While my output may not be as high as I desire, I strive to maintain a schedule that allows me to produce work.
- Determination: Above all, the only real failure I’ve ever encountered is quitting. When I abandon a project, I am not just giving up on the task—I am giving up on myself, which is far more disheartening.
I believe there will be brighter days ahead once I achieve my goals. I remain focused on my objectives, and although the journey may be arduous, I trust that progress will lead me to the finish line.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, I urge you to keep moving forward. Ignore the noise from self-proclaimed experts and listen to your inner voice. Take care of yourself and confront challenges head-on. Remember the advice I shared with my troops: you can go over, under, or through any obstacle. The only thing standing in your way is you.
You will reach your destination, and I’ll be right there with you, even if I have to pull you along.
Let’s do this!
P.S. Andy… you’ve got this, my friend. I believe in you. Thank you for the inspiration.
