Qualifying My Voice in Codependency Recovery: A Personal Journey

Written on

Introduction to My Qualifications

Recently, I realized that I haven't adequately introduced myself or explained my qualifications for writing about codependency recovery. Many potential readers might wonder, "What makes her credible?" Here’s why I believe I can contribute meaningfully to the discussion surrounding codependency recovery:

Firstly, I possess strong writing skills. My ability to communicate through words—whether written, spoken, or listened to—feels like a divine gift. I was reading well before I entered school and performed exceptionally on language proficiency tests in sixth grade. My mother took me to the library every weekend during my childhood, where I would borrow the maximum allowed—six books—and devour them within the week before returning for six more.

My Journey in Al-Anon

I have been a member of Al-Anon since 1989, having previously attended Alateen. Over the years, I have gained invaluable listening and speaking experience through countless Al-Anon meetings. I’ve had the opportunity to both chair and speak at these gatherings, and I’ve held various roles, including Treasurer and General Chairperson, where I organized monthly chairpersons for our meetings. Additionally, I established a new Al-Anon meeting, which thrived for about six years before the pandemic affected attendance.

Professional Experience in Family Counseling

My professional background includes working as a family counselor at Mirmont Treatment Center in Media, PA. There, I guided families of alcoholics in understanding their roles within the addiction cycle, participated in enrichment classes, and provided explanations of the basic addiction model to help family members recognize that alcoholism is a genuine disease. In fact, the diagnosis code for alcoholism—F10.20—comes from the International Classification of Diseases, 10th version. This acknowledgment of alcoholism as a medical condition is significant, as even insurance companies, typically reluctant to cover treatments, recognize the need for such care.

Contribution to Al-Anon Literature

Moreover, I have significantly contributed to the daily reader for Al-Anon titled Hope for Today. This publication consists of 366 daily readings submitted by adult children of alcoholics. Although my name isn't listed in the book due to the anonymous nature of Al-Anon, I played a key role in selecting, editing, and writing content to ensure it aligned with Al-Anon principles.
