Rising COVID-19 Cases Prompt Texas to Reinstate Mask Mandate

Written on

Chapter 1: The New Mask Mandate

In light of the alarming increase in COVID-19 cases, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a statewide mandate for face masks to mitigate the virus's spread. As many states began to lift restrictions and restart their economies, health officials cautioned against neglecting essential safety measures such as hand hygiene, social distancing, and wearing non-medical face coverings in public spaces. Unfortunately, Texas opted to disregard scientific guidance and resumed economic activities.

Many individuals believe that political leaders should have acted sooner to establish a comprehensive mask policy. A study from Columbia University suggested that implementing social distancing and restrictions just one week earlier could have saved approximately 36,000 lives.

In April, we raised concerns about the necessity of extending the stay-at-home order to prevent overwhelming the healthcare system in the U.S. With local hospitals nearing capacity, we appreciate the actions taken today. The U.S. recorded 55,000 new cases just today, and NIH director Dr. Anthony Fauci warned that we could be heading toward 100,000 cases per day.

As the news has highlighted, masks have returned to the forefront of public discourse. It's astonishing that we are still debating the necessity of wearing masks. As cases of COVID-19 escalate, the contentious discussion surrounding face coverings resurfaces. Who would have predicted that donning a surgical mask would become a political topic?

Every individual around the globe desires to halt the transmission of COVID-19, and the evidence is unequivocal: masks play a crucial role in reducing the virus's spread. We welcome the actions taken by our Governor today; it's never too late to make the right decision.

Exceptions to the mask mandate include:

  • Children under 10
  • Individuals with medical conditions or disabilities that prevent mask-wearing
  • When eating or drinking at a restaurant
  • While exercising outdoors, provided safe distance is maintained

Why should we wear a mask?

As Americans, we value our personal freedoms, and the decision to wear a mask often feels like a personal choice. Should we prioritize a minor sacrifice of freedom for the collective good of society? Or should individual liberty reign supreme, even if it results in the transmission of a deadly virus?

Blaise Pascal, a 17th-century philosopher, argued that the logical choice is to opt for infinite benefits over a finite loss. Pascal’s Wager can be seen as a gamble that we all must consider. Ultimately, there is only one victor.

A Philosophical Perspective on Face Masks

Pascal’s Wager offers a neutral viewpoint regarding mask-wearing.

What if you were unknowingly spreading the virus?

Recent insights have highlighted the importance of asymptomatic carriers in the fight against the pandemic. Some individuals can transmit SARS-Cov-2 even before exhibiting symptoms, while others may spread the infection without ever feeling ill. Each of us could potentially be an asymptomatic carrier.

How would your behavior change if you knew you were a COVID-19 carrier capable of infecting others?

What if the simple act of wearing a mask could save a life?

A mask is a manifestation of compassion

Healthcare professionals dedicate their lives to safeguarding patients, staff, and their families. Wearing a mask is not merely a matter of self-protection; it is an act of kindness towards others.

On my first day off since the pandemic began, I encountered three women at Walmart who reminded me that human kindness is boundless. Our world may feel gloomy, but heroes exist everywhere, and we need to honor them. Acts of kindness can triumph over the virus.

Making Kindness More Contagious Than the Pandemic

Three women at Walmart inspired hope in the battle against COVID-19.

How to Create a Mask

Our obstetrics and gynecology office must remain operational, as pregnancy is unaffected by the pandemic. We urgently needed masks and reached out to local sewing groups on Facebook for assistance. Generous contributions from groups like the Quilting Angels resulted in over 5,000 masks to protect expectant mothers.

Here’s how anyone can make a mask to help save lives.

Everything You Need to Know to Make a Face Covering to Stop the Spread of COVID-19

Wearing a mask is an expression of kindness toward others.

Masks Protect Healthcare Workers

Healthcare professionals require your support. My colleagues are courageous and dedicated, yet they are also exhausted and fearful of contracting COVID-19 at work. This is the new reality for medical staff as they grapple with the challenges posed by social distancing.

The U.S. relies on doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers to combat the spread of COVID-19. Your cooperation in wearing a mask can help keep us safe. The fear of being silent carriers weighs heavily on us, as our primary responsibility is to protect others.

I Love You, Please Don’t Touch Me

For healthcare workers, returning home from work now poses a potential risk to our families.

I wear a mask for you. Will you wear one for me?

America needs to understand that SARS-CoV-2 does not discriminate based on personal beliefs. To safeguard those we cherish, we must all wear masks.

Imagine standing outside on a chilly day and witnessing your breath form a visible cloud. These clouds represent the respiratory droplets we exhale daily, and viral particles can hitch a ride on them, spreading the virus from person to person.

Covering your face is a small yet significant sacrifice to protect another life.

This Is the Single Easiest Way to Help During the Pandemic

I wear a mask to shield you. Will you wear one to shield me?

The situation continues to worsen, hospitals are nearing full capacity, and the future is unpredictable. Eventually, this pandemic will subside. Treatments will advance, a vaccine will be developed, and herd immunity will be reached one way or another.

We will emerge from this crisis. Until then, it is imperative that we all do our part to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

We are in this together.

Wear a mask.
