# Transitioning from iPhones to the Asus Zenfone: A Personal Journey

Written on

Chapter 1: My iPhone Journey

Back in June 2007, I was among the first in Monticello, Arkansas to acquire the new iPhone.

In those summer months of 2007, I experienced a wave of excitement over technology. Whenever I used my iPhone, curious strangers would approach me to take a look at this groundbreaking device. It was truly revolutionary. Prior to the iPhone, I was fond of my Palm Treo 650, having never warmed up to Blackberry. The iPhone's release captivated me, and each new version brought innovative features. The regular updates to iOS made my phone feel fresh, even if I was merely upgrading the software. My love for the home button is something I've noted before.

When the iPhone X was released, I was eager to try it, but after a few days, I returned it, disappointed. I've watched Apple progressively eliminate the home button, embracing facial recognition technology in a way that feels unnecessary to me.

My journey included upgrading from the iPhone 6 to 7, then 8, and finally the SE models (1 & 2 from 2020). I opted not to purchase the iPhone SE (2022) because it felt stale—a mere upgrade with a better camera and faster processor.

As iPhones grew larger, I found myself longing for a compact device. Even the iPhone SE remains one of the smallest smartphones available today. I held my breath as Apple announced the iPhone 14 series, hoping for a redesign of the SE that would retain the home button or perhaps introduce a touch ID feature on the side or screen. Unfortunately, the new models were just larger and better in terms of camera specs. Although iOS 16 introduced great features, my iPhone SE could handle it just fine. The constant swiping required since the X’s release has also become a nuisance.

My frustrations with Apple’s direction in the smartphone market aren’t new. In a previous post titled "Why I think Apple is missing the iPhone mark," I hinted that I was ready to move on. I stuck around for another four years, often teasing my Android-using friends.

Section 1.1: The Android Awakening

Over the past couple of years, I started to notice the impressive smartphones from Samsung, Google, and Motorola. Still, none compelled me to make a switch. However, when the iPhone 14 lineup debuted in 2022, I knew it was time to explore alternatives.

I considered the Google Pixel 7 and was intrigued by the foldable Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4 and Flip4. Yet, it was an underrated device that truly caught my attention: the Asus Zenfone 9.

With its 5.9" display, this compact Android device packs a powerful punch. It’s just slightly taller than my SE and has a similar width. Plus, it features a convenient touch ID button on the side, which also allows for one-handed scrolling.

While others showcase their unboxing experiences, here’s mine:

Upon powering on the Zenfone, I was pleasantly surprised to see it prompt me to transfer data from my previous phone. The iPhone was an option, so I connected the devices with a lighting cable to USB-C, and like magic, the Zenfone imported my contacts, calendars, and apps from the Google Play store. It felt remarkably seamless—almost like an Apple experience.

Section 1.2: The Transition

Setting up my new Asus Zenfone 9

Getting my SIM card to work on the new phone wasn't as straightforward as I had hoped. I had to visit the AT&T store to have my SIM reprogrammed to the Zenfone's IMEI number. Although it took a few hours for the service to activate, I spent that time personalizing my home screens to mirror my SE.

My first text was sent to my family group, which includes my kids and their spouses. They were aware I had ordered a new phone but were unaware of its arrival. As my texts appeared green, the playful banter began, and I relished it.

Now, I’m officially a green bubble user, ready to disrupt group chats with my Apple friends. After a day with the phone, I’m still discovering its features, but so far, I’m pleased. I’ll be sure to share any pros and cons I encounter along the way.

Until next time, think differently.
