# Embrace Detail in Your Writing: A Guide to Richer Prose

Chapter 1: The Perils of Minimalism
Writing can sometimes fall into the trap of brevity, which may lead to a lack of depth. This is my personal warning to writers: avoid being frugal with your details.
In my university years, people occasionally likened my writing style to that of Hemingway—not because I matched his brilliance, but due to my similar restraint in detail. While I haven't fully examined why I tend to write succinctly, I have a few insights:
- I naturally gravitate toward concise prose in my reading; overly elaborate writing tires me.
- Being an introvert, I often allow others to dominate conversations, a tendency that spills into my writing.
- I don't typically outline my stories. As I craft dialogue and descriptions, I'm simultaneously figuring out the plot, leading me to rush through the details. I often plan to enrich my drafts later, but it rarely suffices.
So, what can I do to rectify this issue?
Unfortunately, the solution points back to outlining—my perennial challenge. If I establish a clear structure for my narrative, I could feel more at ease while writing each scene. With a solid understanding of how each part connects and without the stress of an unresolved conclusion, I can focus on enriching the details and character interactions. In the past, I've shortchanged these elements, ultimately depriving my audience of a fuller experience.
While a clever plot twist can be enjoyable, the primary reason we read is to escape to new worlds and to understand the thoughts and emotions of unfamiliar characters. This depth is often what I find lacking in Hemingway's work: a sense of place and distinct personalities. Truman Capote famously critiqued Hemingway, saying, "That isn't writing at all, it's typing." (Though it's worth noting that he actually said this about Jack Kerouac.) Regardless, it serves as a reminder for me to aim to be a storyteller, not merely a typist. Remember: writers must not be stingy with their details.
