Day 19: In what ways can I enhance my actions or thoughts to nurture greater kindness towards myself?
As a lifelong advocate for authenticity, I have committed to the challenging journey of evolving into my best self. This endeavor is a pathway to happiness, albeit not always easy. I firmly believe it’s the right course. After all, we only get one life on this beautiful planet.
I strive to live in a way that prevents future regrets.
One significant method for fostering kindness towards myself involves prioritizing self-love and self-care, rather than sidelining my own needs.
Engaging with my 12-step program has been a pivotal part of this journey towards self-kindness.
I also make it a point to indulge in activities that uplift my spirit—reading and watching nostalgic shows provide a respite for my anxious thoughts, soothing my mind and connecting me with the outside world.
Practicing gratitude has profoundly impacted my ability to extend the same kindness to myself that I readily give to others.
Additionally, I’ve become more aware of when I slip into worry. In those moments, I pause everything to release my concerns into the universe. This act of letting go alleviates my anxiety enough for me to move forward.
I ensure to have an early night at least once every two weeks to catch up on sleep.
Moreover, I’ve reduced my caffeine intake, opting instead for more water and hot chocolate.
I also aim to consume more fruits and vegetables. While I typically prioritize my daughter’s nutritional needs, I’ve begun to incorporate small, healthy choices for myself. It’s not that I undervalue my health; I’ve simply always placed her well-being first.
Getting outside to soak up some sunlight and taking a daily vitamin has become part of my routine. I've also eliminated certain habits to practice self-kindness, including:
- Caffeine
- Alcohol
- Social media
- Horror movies
- Excessive sugar
A balanced approach is key; too much of anything can be as harmful as too little.
I’ve learned to listen to my body, embracing moderation in all things.
The most significant shift occurred when I acknowledged my tendency for negative self-talk. I realized my inner critic mirrored the voices of my parents. While those survival strategies helped me through childhood, they no longer served me.
I’m not an expert; I still find myself spiraling into worry. However, I’ve learned to step back, breathe, and distract myself, halting the cycle of anxiety.
This journey has enabled me to treat myself with more compassion and love, accepting myself as I am rather than dwelling on past awkward moments. I have developed a newfound appreciation for my body, which has overcome challenges, nurtured a child, and continues to support my life.
I am on a path towards happiness—though not fully there yet, I am certainly kinder to myself than I have been in the past.
I invite you to share your thoughts and actions on how you can show yourself more kindness in the comments. We can all learn and grow from one another.
