Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: A Game Worth the Wait

Written on

Chapter 1: First Impressions of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Last night, at the stroke of midnight, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was released, and many gamers, myself included, eagerly dove in. Initially, I had planned to wait before trying it, but the excitement was too much to resist. I ended up playing for a brief period, much shorter than my usual sessions of 45 to 60 minutes.

After a few minutes with the game, I decided to switch it off and dedicate the rest of my night to finishing a chapter of my current novel. However, stepping away from the game led me to a realization: sometimes, rushing to experience something does not diminish its significance when you choose to return later.

As I reflected on this, I remembered the unfinished business I had on my PS4 with Ghost of Tsushima and God of War. I’ll revisit those shortly. My initial thoughts on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth are quite positive. The gameplay feels smooth, allowing players to jump right in without getting bogged down by excessive open-world distractions.

The interchangeable characters are a standout feature; I particularly enjoyed playing as Sephiroth. Although I didn’t appreciate him as a villain in the original game, it was thrilling to harness his power for my own advantage. The graphics are stunning, making it easy to immerse myself in the game, much like the original.

Combat has evolved, requiring players to engage more creatively. Some enemies seem less capable, while others demand your full attention to gain the upper hand. Additionally, the inclusion of two summon materia and bonuses from the Remake save data is a delightful touch.

Yet, I found it challenging to walk away from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. I felt compelled to keep playing but recognized that I had to prioritize my ongoing projects on the PS4. This decision was also influenced by my desire to complete my current novel, particularly the one titled "For the Love of Games."

When a game launches, it often comes with its share of potential issues, such as lag or glitches. This is one reason I typically avoid playing games immediately upon release. I learned this lesson the hard way with Star Wars Jedi Survivor, which required significant updates to function properly.

Recently, every time I logged into my PS5, I was met with updates related to the Lords of the Fallen remake. I also received updates for Wo Long Fallen Dynasty and Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel. Thus, while I wait for other titles to stabilize, I can focus on completing the games I haven't finished yet.

One frustrating aspect of the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth download was how I spent the night gaming on my PS5 while waiting for it to complete. I ended up losing precious hours of sleep, feeling the urge to just go to bed and let the download finish. In the past, I’ve paused downloads and resumed them the next day, but now I know that if a download takes three hours or more, I should just let it run overnight.

Ultimately, I’ve come to understand that desire is more of a journey than a destination. I’ve learned to approach my desires with caution. Often, I think I want something more than I truly do, but when clarity strikes, I remind myself that waiting is sometimes the best option. The key lies in knowing when to act and when to hold back. I believe I’ve reached a point where I can navigate this balance effectively.
