Finding Joy Beyond Self-Reflection: A Different Perspective

Written on

Chapter 1: The Question of Self-Discovery

"Is it alright to prioritize my own well-being? If I don't, who will?" Megan pondered aloud.

Megan, a kind-hearted student who frequently attended my classes and engaged in discussions afterward, revealed over time that her home life was fraught with difficulties.

What I cherish most about teaching, regardless of the subject, is the opportunity to engage with students' questions. One particular Monday evening, Megan posed a profound inquiry: "How can I truly find myself?"

Section 1.1: A Surprising Encounter

Her question lingered in my mind, and two years later, when I encountered her again, I had the chance to reflect back on that moment. She appeared genuinely happy, sharing that she had moved out of her mother's house, secured a good job, and was in a positive relationship. Life seemed to be on an upward trajectory for her.

"So, Megan," I asked, "have you discovered who you are?"

Her response was unexpected.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Unexpected Truth

"I have!" she exclaimed, her face lighting up. "But it wasn’t where I thought I would find it."

She noticed my curiosity and elaborated. "You know all that talk about self-exploration and looking within to find your true self?" I nodded in acknowledgment.

"That’s all nonsense," she declared. "The more I searched within, the more I felt a void."

She continued, "To cope with the darkness and sadness I felt, I started fabricating stories about my worth. I finally realized I was deceiving myself into believing I had something valuable inside."

Section 1.2: A Unique Perspective

There was a dissonance in her narrative. While self-reflection and mindfulness are often heralded as essential, I questioned their universal applicability.

Our culture promotes the idea that embracing one's true self leads to numerous benefits. However, what about those who, upon introspection, might confront despair? What about individuals seeking a new identity?

Chapter 2: Discovering Joy Outside Oneself

"Where did you ultimately find yourself?" I was eager to learn about Megan's transformation.

"I found myself beyond myself," she replied, breaking the silence with a shy laugh.

"Doc, I was always told to strip away the layers created by societal expectations and personal conditioning, but what I discovered outside was a vibrant world ready to welcome me."

"There are so many good-hearted people in the world. It’s a remarkable place, brimming with experiences and opportunities. There’s so much to achieve!"

Her voice trembled as she continued, "When I sought the good within, I encountered my own brokenness. But when I looked for goodness in others and the world, I found true joy."

Section 2.1: Challenging Conventional Wisdom

Megan's experience deviates significantly from mainstream advice. Rarely will a psychologist assert that there’s nothing worthwhile within. The idea of needing a complete transformation might even sound radical.

Over time, I’ve begun to scrutinize conventional beliefs. Perhaps self-examination isn’t universally beneficial. Some may need to focus more on connections with others rather than introspection.

What if the real truth lies not in individual revelations but in recognizing the vast goodness present in the world? Perhaps it’s time to shift our gaze outward instead of continuously looking inward.

Last Thoughts: A Balanced Perspective

As humans, we require peace both internally and externally. Sadly, many individuals grapple with such internal turmoil that their inner world feels chaotic.

I believe that for some, "following their heart" may lead to bitterness rather than resolution. Instead of digging deep within, they might find greater meaning through external exploration.

What are your thoughts?

Is it possible to cherish life without first loving yourself?

Do we have to choose between the two, or is there a harmonious balance to be struck?
