Finding Your True Self Beyond Fame and Fortune

Chapter 1: The Striking Resemblance

“Did you know you resemble Natalie Portman, the Hollywood actress?”

A young woman with a striking resemblance to Natalie Portman.

“Yes,” replied the saleswoman at the Skechers store, beaming; “Everyone tells me that!”

In that moment, I could swear I was looking at her! There was no cosmetic surgery, no extensive makeup, no designer outfits, and no luxury perfume. It was as if I was seeing a youthful Natalie Portman suspended in time—the version who never became a Hollywood star or won an Oscar. This was the Natalie who didn’t begin her acting career at eleven, didn’t hail from a family of scholars, and didn’t get accepted into Harvard. It was Natalie Portman devoid of her accolades.

How flattering it would be to encounter someone who resembles me, someone others frequently mention, and for someone else to write about it, eventually reaching a broad audience.

Chapter 2: Natalie Portman's Journey

In a motivational address at a Harvard graduation ceremony, Natalie Portman reflects on her life, career, and education. According to her assessment of her upbringing, she was privileged, coming from a respected family and attending elite institutions while already in the public eye as an actress. Yet, she yearned to be recognized seriously, as acting was often deemed “frivolous.” To leave a mark on history, she felt compelled to “do something that changed the world.”

Even after gaining admission to Harvard, she didn’t feel fulfilled. She believed that her achievements were merely a byproduct of her fame. As she recounts, she needed to undertake significant courses to disprove that notion. Coming from a well-off family, she realized that acting alone wouldn’t suffice for her growth. Thus began her journey as a dedicated Harvard student.

By the time she graduated, Portman understood that earning her degree was merely a “reward” for her years of learning, not the ultimate goal. The diploma was something Harvard could bestow, but the real purpose was a personal quest. Eagerly, she anticipated returning to her true passion—“making films.”

As Natalie mentions, she possessed numerous “sought-after toys and prizes,” including fame, wealth, and a degree, which were the envy of many. However, the essence of who she was would remain elusive without pursuing her heart’s desire.

In this video, Natalie Portman discusses how Rihanna's encouragement helped her navigate personal challenges, showcasing the importance of support in tough times.

Chapter 3: The Salesgirl's Perspective

At my initial encounter with the salesgirl's remarkable similarity to the famous actress, I couldn't help but think about the disparity between their lives. While she helped me choose sneakers, the real Natalie Portman was likely rehearsing lines or preparing for a role, possibly earning significantly more per hour.

On my journey home from the mall, I pondered the “what ifs”—what if the salesgirl had been a privileged child, what if she had access to the same opportunities as Portman, what if she were born into a prominent family?

Upon reaching home, I stumbled upon a YouTube video of Portman's life lessons for Harvard graduates.

In this insightful video, Natalie Portman revisits her past roles and experiences, highlighting the importance of resilience and self-discovery in her journey.

I listened to her share her struggles, self-doubts, and relentless need to remind herself of her purpose. She spoke of heartbreak, depression, and the hard work she put into her education, sometimes merely to get through it, even if her performance wasn’t stellar. It became clear to me that the essence of her journey lay in her determination to uncover her true calling.

Chapter 4: Universal Truths

Ultimately, from my reflections and observations, I arrived at a significant realization: while factors like birthplace, family background, and available resources may influence the game, they do not alter the rules.

One can emerge from challenging conditions and still harbor hope for self-improvement, or be privileged yet struggle to find motivation. The nature of the game may vary, but the fundamental rules remain constant for everyone.
