Reflecting on My Past: Essential Lessons for My Younger Self

Written on

Chapter 1: Nostalgic Reflections

As I reminisce about my past, especially after the loss of my parents, I find myself grappling with a mixture of fond and troubling memories. It's a blend of experiences that, while imperfect, doesn't leave me in despair. There are certainly moments I wish I could revisit and offer some advice to my younger self.

Reflective moment on life lessons

Section 1.1: Crucial Advice for the Future

  1. Avoid watching The Exorcist. It’s an unsettling film that will linger in your thoughts at the most inconvenient times, especially during solitary nights.
  2. Prioritize your health sooner. While pizza is a delightful indulgence, it doesn’t provide essential nutrients. Moderation is key, and don't forget to hydrate!
  3. Steer clear of a career in technical writing. It can become overly complex as technology evolves. If you do pursue this path, be cautious about accepting a position at a firm dominated by lawyers.
  4. Contemplate careers in woodworking or culinary arts. Choose something that will earn you genuine appreciation from others.
  5. Seek better friendships beyond just convenience, aside from J.J. Don’t settle for those who are merely available, even if they enjoy the same hobbies.
  6. Start saving money earlier in life. Question the necessity of every book you buy. The answer may often be “yes,” but at least consider it.
  7. When asked about your desired instrument, think "drums." You might excel as a drummer, and it’s a great way to irritate your parents while learning a musical skill.
  8. Reach out to Pam and mend your relationship. Acknowledge your past mistakes and make amends.
  9. While you have a solid relationship with your parents, take the time to ask them more questions while you still can. Their insights are invaluable.
  10. Be prepared for a significant emotional challenge around age 35. It may feel overwhelming, but you will find a way to navigate through it.
