# Rethinking the Pursuit of Self-Improvement: A New Perspective

On a sunny Arizona morning, I find myself in a swing, observing the sunlight gradually illuminate my backyard. After months of feeling trapped in a quarantine-like state, I, like many others, am experiencing a sense of confinement, fatigue, and a lack of inspiration. I struggle with the feeling that my life isn’t progressing. Even when I attempt to be productive, the long periods spent indoors leave me feeling stagnant.

Over the past year, I have become increasingly focused on the concept of “productivity,” a theme that seems to dominate discussions among Medium readers. I often think that if I could just concentrate better, maintain a healthier diet, or achieve mental clarity, I would unlock my brain’s potential and, consequently, become more successful.

In a capitalistic society, the drive for personal productivity is ingrained in us. The elusive sense of achievement we chase through our daily grind and hustle culture often feels just out of reach. It’s no surprise that many of us are fiercely pursuing self-improvement and personal branding. Above all, we seek promotions, financial independence, or simply the satisfaction of feeling good about ourselves, even if just for a day.

Then come the self-proclaimed productivity gurus, eager to profit by convincing us that our success is limited solely by our underperforming minds. These opportunists exploit our insecurities, marketing supplements and “hacks” that promise a better version of ourselves.

Why wouldn’t we at least consider their offerings? If we don’t, we risk being labeled as failures—unworthy of promotions, affection, or success in the relentless rat race.

Listening to podcasts like the Joe Rogan Experience reveals the profound sense of disconnection many of us feel in our culture. Many individuals experience a lack of fulfillment and a sense of community, as our professional lives often lack purpose and love. In our quest for meaning, we might resort to microdosing or other fads to enhance our productivity.

The pursuit of understanding our purpose and boosting productivity isn't limited to fans of Joe Rogan. It's a widespread phenomenon, from those following Gwyneth Paltrow and her Goop brand to freelancers yearning to escape corporate confines.

Recently, while contemplating whether my own obsession with productivity was justified, I came across an insightful article by journalist Kaitlyn Tiffany in Vox titled The All-Too-Understandable Urge to Buy a Better Brain. In this piece, Tiffany explores the burgeoning market for cognitive enhancers, documenting her personal experiences with several products. She uncovers significant cultural triggers that define our current societal moment.

Doctors contextualize the phenomenon of “brain fetishization,” noting that pre-capitalist philosophies emphasized community wholeness, while today’s neoliberal systems promote the atomistic individual within the marketplace, compelling them to seek self-completeness.

This notion encapsulates the essence of the American Dream in an academic light. We currently inhabit a time shaped by rampant individualism, fed by our attachment to social networks where we commodify our lives for validation, money, and products, all in a bid to prove we’ve achieved self-actualization better than others.

At the core of this continuous cycle of self-improvement lies the belief that we should always strive to be better. We could always accumulate more wealth, have a more toned physique, or be more enlightened, especially when we observe Instagram influencers seemingly thriving.

Caught in a “never good enough” cycle, we have surrendered our authenticity in the pursuit of social status, often sacrificing the essence of our lives to feel validated.

While excessive self-improvement can lead to negative consequences, it is essential to recognize that striving for betterment is not inherently detrimental. We all have areas in which we can grow, such as enhancing our communication skills, fostering loving relationships, and serving others.

However, we must pause and contemplate the ultimate destination of our self-improvement efforts. We must acknowledge that life inherently includes aging and suffering, and attempting to eliminate these realities through relentless self-enhancement may ultimately prove futile.

Eventually, we must learn to embrace who we are and abandon the need for external validation. Acknowledging our multifaceted nature, including our flaws, can reveal the beauty within our complexities.

In summary, there exists a time for improvement and a time for self-acceptance. We must recognize that our existence is part of a larger narrative and that excessive focus on individualism can lead to detrimental consequences.
