Chapter 1: Making a Change
Imagine you've resolved to write a book, launch a podcast, and build a business. Perhaps you're yearning for more freedom, tired of clocking long hours at a job that makes you feel like just another employee. Or maybe you've reached a low point and decided that change is necessary.
Regardless of your situation, you're on a quest for happiness and success, yet you may feel a void inside. Many of us can relate to this feeling of uncertainty. Here are three crucial lessons I've garnered from my life experiences.
1. Every Decision Carries a Consequence
I consider myself a reflective individual, but I often find myself reacting impulsively. It's a common trait; we sometimes make choices driven by immediate emotions instead of careful thought. We tend to set lofty expectations and bite off more than we can handle, banking on our willpower to navigate challenges.
This often leads us astray from what truly helps us achieve our aspirations. The reality is that true success stems from consistent habits and patience, not just from strategies or tactics.
What you repeatedly do shapes who you are now and who you will become. Therefore, if you felt trapped in a job, simply stepping out on your own won’t guarantee liberation and success. While it may ignite a spark, unless you cultivate new habits, you'll likely revert to old patterns.
People often avoid establishing habits because they're focused on the end goal. This pursuit can be enticing, but it blinds us to the opportunities available along the way. Instead of fixating on a destination, aim for gradual changes by fostering patience and building new habits. Much of our lives operate on autopilot, so seek ways to reinvest your time by breaking down your day into manageable practices that yield better outcomes.
James Clear refers to this concept as habit stacking. To arrive at my current position, I had to create an environment conducive to success by integrating new routines into my life. For instance, as an early riser, I shifted my focus from immediate workouts to hydration and meditation. After meditating, I would journal and write until my daughter woke up.
This approach worked effectively because it aligned with my natural rhythm. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the idea of writing a book, I connected my new habits to something familiar: my morning routine. The outcome? A book, a budding business, and 100 podcast episodes.
2. Position Yourself for Success
Many perceive my daily routine of writing, training, and maintaining my lifestyle as effortless because of my military background. This assumption couldn't be further from the truth. If you know me, you understand the challenges of single parenting, business development, and personal care.
While I may be trained for resilience, I recognized that a survival mindset alone wouldn’t suffice during tough times. To write a book and create a podcast, I had to mitigate decision fatigue, as willpower has its limits.
What I've discovered is that our actions are often driven more by emotions than by logic. We tend to make choices without questioning their rationale, leading us to ignore our true desires in favor of what we feel we "should" do. This realization was quite a revelation for me.
During a 2021 conference, we analyzed our lives in detail to identify where we were losing energy. I calculated my potential earnings per hour spent on tasks such as cleaning and grocery shopping. To my surprise, I was dedicating countless hours to chores, believing it was my responsibility as a single dad. This was merely a narrative keeping me stagnant.
Initially, hiring a cleaner felt like an unnecessary expense, but it ultimately saved me time and energy. By honestly evaluating my life and eliminating clutter, I created an environment that aligned with my goals.
Eventually, you'll find yourself changing your lifestyle because it feels right, not out of obligation. Activities like meditation, writing, and exercising become integral to who you are and who you aspire to be, leading to tremendous momentum.
3. Embrace the Journey
I've faced numerous moments of feeling lost, especially after experiencing significant loss. Yet, here I am today, writing and celebrating my 100th podcast episode.
I won't delve into the details of my journey, as they are captured in my book. However, I wish I had appreciated the importance of slowing down earlier in life.
Society often lures us into seeking instant gratification, while social media encourages us to chase certainty. The truth is, everything we desire is available to us in the present moment. Certainty is merely an illusion—what truly exists is now. When we relinquish the urge to seek fulfillment elsewhere, we open ourselves to clarity, trust, and the opportunity to embrace life.
Life is overflowing with possibilities. By investing in your relationships, health, and self-growth, you'll find yourself becoming unstoppable. No matter where you are on your journey, take a moment to acknowledge your progress. You are exactly where you need to be.
