# Why Is It That We Always Want More? Insights on Fulfillment

Written on

Chapter 1: The Never-Ending Pursuit

Let me pose two questions: Have you ever found yourself thinking, "Once I acquire this, I'll feel complete"? How many times have you reassured yourself with that thought? It seems there is always something else we think we need to feel whole.

We live in a world where every product, from fashionable clothes to state-of-the-art appliances, claims to fill this void. Yet, despite this constant influx of options, we find ourselves yearning for more—nothing ever seems sufficient.

Concept of perpetual desire for more in life

Innovations and advancements, particularly in technology, are undeniably beneficial. However, they can also become overwhelming in our everyday lives. There will perpetually be a newer, improved version of everything we possess.

Beyond material possessions, this quest for more extends into our aspirations. Let’s examine the various types of achievements we strive for and the tendency to feel they are never enough.

Section 1.1: Categories of Achievements

I categorize achievements or goals into three distinct types, which often leads to confusion regarding their prioritization.

  1. Societal Expectations

These are milestones deemed necessary for a fulfilling life as dictated by societal norms: completing high school, obtaining a college degree, securing a job, finding a partner, getting married, and raising children.

  2. Industry Standards

These achievements stem from consumer culture, such as the latest smartphone, laptop, or kitchen gadget.

  3. Personal Ambitions

These are the goals that truly resonate with us but often get pushed to the backburner—our dreams and aspirations.

Understanding the different types of achievements

Section 1.2: The Core Issue

So, what’s the crux of the matter? The challenge lies in discerning whether our next goal genuinely belongs to us. Are you pursuing that degree out of personal desire, or simply to fulfill societal expectations? Are you upgrading to the latest tech because your current device is inadequate, or just to avoid feeling outdated?

Reflect on this: when you engage in pursuits that genuinely resonate with you, driven by your inner instincts, you don’t feel unfulfilled or embarrassed. More importantly, you savor the journey rather than anxiously awaiting the destination.

Subsection 1.2.1: A Metaphor for Life

Think of your life as a garden. Each time you achieve a goal, you receive a seed. You nurture it with your own efforts, allowing it to flourish. The water you use to help your garden thrive comes from within you.

Often, we mistakenly believe that future achievements will provide us with the water necessary for growth.

Nurturing personal growth and fulfillment

This misconception leads to anxiety about reaching our goals, as we fear our garden will wither without them. In reality, achievements merely offer seeds, not sustenance.

You might argue that without seeds, your garden won’t flourish beautifully. I’m not suggesting you forgo pursuing your dreams, but rather that you should chase the seeds that truly matter to you.

If your garden is filled with vibrant flowers, why would you strive for a cactus? Perhaps your father pursues cacti because his garden is filled with exotic plants, but that doesn’t mean you should follow suit. Focus on what you genuinely wish to cultivate in your own garden.

Chapter 2: Reflection and Growth

This video, titled "Why Nothing You Do Is Good Enough For Them," delves into the pressures that lead us to feel inadequate, despite our efforts.

In this video, "Why they say 'Nothing I DO is Good Enough!!'", the discussion centers around the societal expectations that contribute to our feelings of unfulfillment.

So, take a moment to reflect. What seeds have you planted that don’t align with your true desires? Which aspirations are you pursuing that won’t enhance your garden? What can you cultivate to make your garden more beautiful?

Thank you for taking the time to engage with this piece! I appreciate the opportunity to share my insights and hope they resonate with you. If you have additional thoughts or perspectives, please feel free to share.

Wishing you a wonderful day!
