Empower Your Digital Skills: Essential Resources for 2023

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Digital Divide

In numerous countries, including the UK, millions of individuals lack internet access, and an even greater number struggle with basic digital competencies. As our society becomes increasingly digitized, those who are digitally disadvantaged find daily life increasingly challenging.

Jemma Waters, Head of Digital Impact and Inclusion at Lloyds Banking Group, highlights this issue, indicating that research from the Lloyds Consumer Index reveals a significant digital divide:

  • 10 million adults in the UK cannot independently access the internet.
  • 11 million adults lack the essential digital skills necessary for daily living.
  • 2.6 million adults are completely excluded from the digital world.

So, what steps can be taken to bridge this gap?

Over time, I’ve compiled a selection of resources that I utilize to enhance my own skills and assist others. While this list isn’t exhaustive, it includes some of my most frequently used tools.

Section 1.1: Top Digital Literacy Resources

1. AbilityNet

AbilityNet stands out as a leading charity in the UK, dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities or impairments access technology and training. The organization offers a wealth of downloadable factsheets that provide valuable advice on how various digital technologies can support people with different conditions. Additionally, there are pre-recorded webinars available on their website.

2. Skills Share

I have developed a strong appreciation for Skills Share and, after enjoying a free trial, opted for an annual subscription. This platform features high-quality training videos from industry professionals. While some may find it variable in quality, my experiences have been overwhelmingly positive.

Currently, I’m engaged in courses like "Microsoft Automate for Beginners," "Productivity for Creators: Systems, Organization & Workflow," and "Video Editing with Final Cut Pro X." I particularly appreciate the sequential modules that guide learners through each step in an engaging video format.

This video titled "10 Online Reading and Language Arts Curriculums for 2023" provides an overview of various curriculums that can enhance literacy skills and is a great resource for educators and learners alike.

3. Digital Unite

Digital Unite focuses on creating a network of champions in workplaces and communities to foster digital skills and confidence among individuals. They offer over 400 guides on topics ranging from computer essentials to digital photography, as well as tips for remote volunteering.

4. Idea

Idea is a fantastic website that features free, interactive mini-courses on a wide range of subjects, including social media, e-safety, and coding. It’s accessible on multiple devices, and learners can earn badges as a form of recognition for their achievements.

5. Hosting a Techy Tea Party

Inspired by an EE resource, I am planning to host a Techy Tea Party in my community. This initiative aims to help individuals maximize their use of devices and access online services. The goal is to enhance digital skills in an informal setting, where participants can connect with others over a cup of tea and some biscuits.

6. Learn My Way

Learn My Way impresses with its clean, simple design, making it easy for volunteers to guide others through its free modules. This resource is particularly popular among volunteers who assist individuals in navigating the digital landscape.

7. Code.org

For those interested in programming, Code.org offers excellent resources for learning the basics. With engaging lesson plans, I’ve successfully run sessions using a Minecraft-inspired app, teaching hundreds of young people over the past two years.

Chapter 2: Enhancing Literacy with Apps

In the video titled "4 BEST Educational Reading Apps || Homeschool Literacy Resources," viewers can discover top reading applications that can aid in literacy development, making them essential tools for both educators and parents.
