Chapter 1: The Importance of Post-Surgery Awareness

After undergoing surgery, it’s crucial to be proactive about your care. Reflecting on my own experience, I wish I had known to inquire about specific post-operative needs, especially after my c-section. The memory of feeling my skin tearing away during recovery still lingers, almost three years later.

Let's rewind to July 2021. I had just welcomed my daughter into the world via c-section. For those unfamiliar, during this procedure, a catheter is placed since you are numbed from the waist down.

A few hours post-surgery, the catheter was removed, but the tape securing the catheter tubes remained on my inner thigh. When I got up to use the restroom, I discovered this tape clinging tightly to my skin.

The nurses hadn’t mentioned anything about how to deal with this tape, so I assumed it was my responsibility to remove it. I attempted to pull it off gently, only to discover that it was incredibly adhesive and located in a sensitive area.

I called my husband, Luke, into the bathroom to help. He tried to assist me with as little discomfort as possible, but it felt like my skin was being ripped off along with the tape. After a lengthy struggle and a lot of internal agony, the tape finally came off, but it took a layer of skin with it. At that point, I was just relieved it was over.

Soon after, my nurse visited. I explained what had happened and showed her the open wounds on my inner thigh. To my astonishment, she replied, “Oh dear, you should have asked for my help. We have a spray that makes tape removal much easier.”

Why wasn’t I informed about this post-catheter? A simple reminder about the tape and a suggestion to use a removal spray would have made a world of difference.

So, if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, don’t hesitate to ask your nurse about any available aids for tape removal to avoid the painful experience I endured.
