A Shift Towards Casual Lifestyles: Sex, Drugs, and Attire

The Evolution of Casual Living
The United States is gradually moving away from its aristocratic heritage, opting for a more relaxed lifestyle. As we embrace these informal customs, one can only imagine how King George III would react from his resting place in Windsor Castle.
Friends with Benefits
Dating applications like Tinder connect individuals based on age, gender, and proximity for one-night encounters. This platform has attracted around 66 million users, leading to a recent study revealing that 78.2% of adults aged 18-34 have engaged in casual sexual relationships with online acquaintances. Notably, over 30% of Tinder participants are married, with at least another 20% likely being dishonest about their relationship status.
Gender Identity: Expanding Options
In the past, gender was largely categorized as male or female. Today, the concept of gender has evolved to become non-binary and fluid, with Tinder now offering 37 different gender identification options. This shift reflects the broader societal acceptance of diverse identities.
Business Casual to Zoom Casual
As the quest for casual connections grows, one might expect a corresponding rise in formal attire; however, the opposite is true. The late 1990s saw a move away from traditional business wear, which included pantyhose and ties—remnants of a bygone aristocratic era. In our pursuit of comfort, we adopted a "business casual" approach, which has since transformed into what some now call "Zoom casual."
During the pandemic, many learned the art of dressing for video calls, often donning a dress shirt over a t-shirt while wearing shorts hidden from the camera's view. So far, the temptation to go pants-less has been avoided.
Moreover, there's a new category known as "active wear," allowing individuals to appear as though they’ve just come from a workout, regardless of their actual gym attendance. For men, hoodies have become the new sport coats, while flip-flops have replaced formal shoes.
Religious Services: A Casual Shift
Religious gatherings have also become less formal. Nowadays, many large church services feature contemporary music, replacing traditional organ melodies with electric guitars. Attendees can sip coffee while enjoying a laid-back pastor dressed in jeans and flip-flops.
The Casual Approach to Drug Use
The casual attitude extends to drug use as well. In February 2021, Oregon became the first state to decriminalize drugs such as heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine. In cities like Seattle, one might even see individuals smoking meth openly. Meanwhile, marijuana is now legal in 30 states, with the remaining 20 having easy access through dealers. A notable incident involved a 46-year-old choir teacher in South Dakota who was arrested after his mother inadvertently shared his pot brownies at a senior center, resulting in unintended high seniors.
A Modern-Day Springfield
Our societal evolution has taken us from the idealized Cleaver family to a more relatable, albeit chaotic, existence akin to the Simpsons. While we might not be living in a fictional setting, our lifestyle choices reflect a significant cultural shift.
So, what about you? Are you swiping on Tinder? Do you own multiple pairs of yoga pants without ever stepping foot in a yoga class? I thought so.
