Avoid the Pitfalls of Overcommitting: Focus on One Task at a Time

The Importance of Focus in New Endeavors
In my early career as a Marketing Engineer, I was also enrolling in a Sales and Marketing course. During my initial weeks on probation, my supervisor imparted valuable advice: to avoid "burning the candle at both ends."
His guidance proved insightful. I needed to acquire new skills rapidly and might have to extend my working hours. Consequently, I decided to defer my course until I acclimated to my new role. While some individuals excel at juggling multiple tasks, many of us struggle with it.
Understanding your personal work style and energy levels is crucial. What may seem straightforward for one person could be overwhelming for another.
When embarking on a new project, maintaining focus is essential, and this idiom serves as an apt reminder. So, why shouldn’t we attempt to burn the candle at both ends? Here are three key reasons:
New Tasks Demand Time for Learning
Engaging in any new task necessitates time for setup, exploration, and education. Even simple activities may require additional time. For instance, if you're new to writing on Medium, you need to familiarize yourself with existing content and discover potential writing topics.
Tasks Require Concentrated Attention
Certain processes need focused attention to remember, execute, and document. For example, as a new sales engineer, you must thoroughly understand your products' specifications. Additionally, it’s crucial to learn about competitors and articulate your product's unique advantages. Thus, concentration is vital.
Unique Skill Sets Are Essential
Each job differs significantly. If you're promoted from a customer service role to a design position, you'll need to develop entirely new skills. The competencies acquired in customer service are not directly transferable to design.
Consequently, when tackling a new project or personal goal, prioritize one task at a time. Avoid the temptation to multitask.
Steer clear of burning the candle at both ends. Every new endeavor requires time and undivided attention.
