Electric Trucks Are Rapidly Approaching Diesel Competition

Chapter 1: The Advancements in Electric Trucks
Electric trucks, once seen as a specialized choice for eco-conscious consumers, are now evolving significantly in terms of range and charging efficiency, as highlighted by a recent assessment from the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE).
The evaluation encompassed 21 electric trucks from various manufacturers, revealing that the average range has risen from 146 miles in 2022 to 211 miles in 2023. Additionally, the average charging time has improved from 1.5 hours to just 1.1 hours. Some models are now capable of exceeding 300 miles on a single charge and can recharge in under an hour. Mike Roeth, the executive director of NACFE, noted, “We’re witnessing substantial advancements in battery technology and charging infrastructure, enhancing the practicality of electric trucks for a broader range of uses.”
Electric trucks are projected to have reduced operating and maintenance costs, along with lower emissions compared to diesel trucks, which contribute approximately 23% of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. transportation sector. They also provide benefits like quieter operation, smoother acceleration, and enhanced performance on inclines.

However, there are hurdles to overcome, such as high initial costs, insufficient charging infrastructure, and inconsistent regulations. The average price of an electric truck stands at around $300,000, while a diesel truck averages $150,000. The distribution and accessibility of charging stations differ significantly by region and truck type, and regulations regarding electric trucks vary across states and countries.
Despite these obstacles, electric trucks are gaining traction and popularity among consumers and manufacturers alike. Major automakers like Ford, Ram, Tesla, Volvo, Daimler, and Hyundai have announced plans to introduce or expand their electric truck lineups in the coming years.
Chapter 2: Major Players in the Electric Truck Market
Ford’s F-150 Lightning has achieved an impressive real-world range of 367 miles on a single charge, surpassing its EPA-estimated range of 300 miles. This truck also includes a rapid-charging feature that can provide an additional 54 miles of range within just 10 minutes. Jim Farley, CEO of Ford, emphasized, “The Lightning is the most significant vehicle Ford has ever produced. It transcends the concept of a truck; it represents a platform for the future.”
Ram’s upcoming 1500 EV, set for release in late 2024, will feature a range-extending gasoline engine option, allowing the vehicle to operate on gasoline when the battery runs low. Additionally, it will come with a wireless charging pad for added convenience. Mike Koval Jr., CEO of Ram, stated, “We believe providing a range-extending option will offer our customers increased flexibility and assurance in selecting an electric truck that meets their needs.”
Electric commercial vehicles are also becoming increasingly mainstream and competitive with diesel trucks across various segments. NACFE estimates that by 2030, electric trucks could be cost-effective for around 60% of the medium-duty and heavy-duty truck markets.
“Electric trucks are no longer just a niche product. They are emerging as a mainstream option that competes directly with diesel trucks across numerous segments,” remarked Dave Schaller, NACFE's industry engagement director.
The shift toward electric trucks is driven by environmental concerns and social responsibility. Many consumers are seeking ways to lessen their carbon footprint and enhance their public image through the adoption of electric vehicles. Governments are also implementing policies and initiatives to encourage the electrification of transportation.
“We must collaborate as an industry to dismantle the barriers and speed up the adoption of electric trucks. They are the future of transportation,” asserted Martin Daum, CEO of Daimler Trucks.
