Exploring AI Creativity: My Transition to Medium for Insights

Chapter 1: Introduction to Creative AI
Welcome to the inaugural edition of Creative AI!
For those unfamiliar with my work, I have been investigating the creative applications of AI for several years. My explorations have included sharing insights on Twitter and LinkedIn, as well as sporadic posts on Medium. Recently, I launched a newsletter titled Cyborgs Writing, which reflects on my experiences teaching AI literacy in my AI & Digital Storytelling course.
➡️ You can find previous issues on my iSophist website.
While my primary focus was not AI, my aim has been to analyze rhetoric within the creator economy. However, my exploration of AI developed into a significant interest as I recognized its vast potential for creators.
Engaging discussions on Twitter and LinkedIn have been enlightening, yet as the AI landscape expands, maintaining in-depth conversations about practical and creative applications has become increasingly challenging. This realization prompted my decision to shift my efforts to Medium, where I can cultivate a community of writers and initiate this biweekly newsletter.
Section 1.1: Why Medium?
I don’t know if you feel the same way, but I’m tired of navigating Substack, where every interaction seems to come with a $5 subscription request.
While I respect that many authors deserve fair compensation for their work, I believe that much of this knowledge should be freely accessible. The public deserves the chance to learn from our insights. Nevertheless, I also think that educators and creators should receive payment for their additional efforts. Medium strikes a balance between these two ideals.
As you may know, Medium compensates authors based on read time, functioning almost like an Uber for writers. Readers pay a single $5 monthly fee to follow any author and access all their content. Unlike Substack, where $5 only grants access to one writer, this model allows readers to explore a multitude of voices.
While it's unlikely that one will become wealthy on Medium, it offers a viable way to be rewarded for developing fresh content and ideas while growing an audience without pressuring everyone for subscriptions.
Moving to Medium allows me to achieve three key objectives:
- Enhances accessibility to my work.
- Provides significant value to readers without the hassle of multiple subscriptions.
- Fosters deeper and more sustained discussions about AI.
I am committed to building Creative AI as a collaborative space for creators eager to explore innovative uses of AI within the Medium community. This is my primary goal, and it also opens doors for greater success on the platform.
I will share my insights and best practices through this biweekly newsletter, but anyone can contribute and join the conversation.
Section 1.2: The iSophist Community
Creative AI is supported by iSophist, a communal hub for creators where I curate materials for my students and audiences. This will enhance my efforts on Medium, especially for those wishing to engage more deeply and support one another.
I am also relocating all my prompts to a section on iSophist called The Prompt Library. Currently, I have several prompt engineering workshops lined up. The more I work with prompting, the more I recognize how essential community is to the process. Like writing, effective prompting thrives on collaboration with diverse voices and perspectives.
AI prompting and training should be transparent; we don’t need any more opaque processes. While I will share all my prompts and strategies freely on Medium and in this newsletter, I will organize them in the Prompt Library for easy access. Additionally, I will include a community space for sharing, discussing, and adapting prompts from any discipline.
Like writing, prompt engineering flourishes through collaboration.
This is merely the beginning. I firmly believe that the most innovative ideas emerge from community engagement, and I am eager to develop this space alongside all of you. Your feedback will be invaluable as we collectively harness the power of AI in creative and groundbreaking ways.
